NORVIS SOFTWARE

NORVIS Suite

The NORVIS software environment covers instrument control, data acquisition, spectral reduction and visualization. The same software framework is used for the different NORVIS units.

Software architecture

Acquisition and processing chain

Each NORVIS unit uses the same acquisition framework and data organisation. Observations can then be processed with the NORVIS reduction software using calibration information associated with the individual instrument.

OPERATIONAL

Instrument control and acquisition

NORVIS Control is the interface used to operate the instrument during observations. It provides access to the science, slit-context and wide-field cameras together with their acquisition parameters and status information.

The science frames can also be converted into a one-dimensional spectral preview during acquisition, providing an immediate check of the recorded signal and spectral features.

Acquisition

Observation sessions and camera acquisition.

Camera settings

Exposure, gain and detector parameters.

Spectral preview

One-dimensional spectrum generated during acquisition.

Context images

Wide-field and slit-context camera streams.

NORVIS Redux

OPERATIONAL

Common spectral reduction

NORVIS Redux processes observations obtained by the different NORVIS units using a common reduction sequence. Calibration parameters specific to each instrument are retained and applied during processing.

The resulting products include reduced one-dimensional spectra and the associated metadata required to compare measurements obtained at different observing sites.

Observations and metadata

Spectral measurements, context images, acquisition parameters and calibration information are stored together within the NORVIS data structure. This provides a consistent description of observations acquired by different instruments.

Observations

Raw measurements

Science frames, slit-context images and wide-field images acquired during an observing session.

Metadata

Acquisition information

UTC time, observing site, instrument configuration, exposure and detector settings.

Data products

Reduced spectra

One-dimensional spectra and associated products generated by NORVIS Redux.

AVAILABLE

Spectra and context images

NORVIS Viewer is a standalone application for displaying reduced spectra together with their corresponding context images and acquisition information.

The application and example observations are available from the NORVIS Data page.
